For those who had just newly enrolled this week, a big welcome to all of you to our Student Life Office blog. In 2012 we will have competitions and weekly updates about what's happening on campus so remember to visit this blog regularly. We also encourage you to leave us a comment if you have any suggestions or would simply like to give us some feedback.

To help you get started into uni life, we've put together some useful tips for you!

10 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE
STARTING UNI:

1. Where are the lockers on campus?

You can find some lockers in Prindiville Hall or "Common Room" (ND3). They cost about $2 for the day.

2. Where can I heat up my lunch?

There is a microwave on your right hand side when you walk into "Common Room" (ND3).

3. Where is the 'lost and found'?

Student Life Office (ND9) manages the lost property. Please contact us on 9433 0580 if you have any lost property inquiries.

4. Where can I get a SmartRider form to enjoy discount on public transport?

Student Administration (ND1) will have Smart Rider form for you to fill out and hand in to the nearest train station.

5. Where is the best place to buy school books?

The Co-Op Bookshop sells second hand Notre Dame books. This is a good way to save money and is close to campus! Find them on the corner of Marine Terrace and Henry Street.

6. Is there a gym on campus?

There is not a gym on campus but we do have on-campus fitness classes and social sports running throughout the semester. There are also a few gyms close by such as Jetts and the Warehouse.

7. Where do I go if I have a IT-related question or need some IT help?

There is a Student IT Helpdesk located in St Teresa’s Library (ND7) and they can be contacted on 9433 0777 or studentitsupport@nd.edu.au or pop over for your question.

8. Who do I speak to about upcoming university social events?

The Student Association is located inside the "Common Room" (ND3) and they are always willing to chat to you about any social events they are organising. They can be contacted on 9433 0587.

They also encourage anyone wanting to get involved in the Student Association or other Clubs and help out with events to come and speak to them.

9. Where is the closest ATM?

The closest ATM is a NAB bank on High Street. If you follow the link below it will show you a range of banks in Fremantle.

10. Where is cheap parking close to campus?

Collie Street car park and the Italian Club along Marine Terrace both charge $6.50 a day for students. For short term parking you will find parking bays along Mouat Street, Croke Street, Henry Street, Marine Terrace and High Street. Most streets in Fremantle have short term parking available.

Associate Professor Mark Tannock and Sports Officer Jaimee Murphy with the 2011 Notre Dame Sports Award winners

Outstanding achievement and participation in sport was celebrated recently when The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Fremantle Campus hosted its 2011 Sports Awards evening.

In what has been an immensely successful sporting year across all three campuses, the Awards evening recognised the most outstanding athletes, sports teams and accomplishments over the past 12 months.

The awards were presented to the successful teams and students by Fremantle Campus Sports Officer Jaimee Murphy and Pro Vice Chancellor, Fremantle, Associate Professor Mark Tannock.

Fresh from representing Australia in beach volleyball at the 2011 Summer Universiade (World University Games) in China, Bachelor of Sport and Recreation Management student Joshua Court was awarded the Male Athlete of the Year.

The Female Athlete of the Year was won by water polo player and Bachelor of Commerce/Sport and Recreation Management student Cathryn Earl who was part of Australia’s under-18 team during a tour of Hawaii in March.

Biomedical Science student and World Champion Gymnast, Lauren Mitchell, was awarded the title of Most Outstanding Achievement in Sport after winning gold on the vault, the beam, the floor exercise and the all-around at the Australian National Championships in July.

This capped off a remarkable 12 months for Lauren having collecting four gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Her feat equalled the world record for the most number of gold medals won by a female gymnast at a Commonwealth Games event.

Notre Dame’s baseball team was awarded the Best Touring Team of the Year trophy, while the men’s hockey team was recognised for their gold medal performance at the 2011 Australian University Games.

Mrs Murphy congratulated Notre Dame’s athletes on their achievements in 2011.

“Even though we are a small university, the enthusiasm and pride students have in representing Notre Dame in national and international competitions is remarkable,” Mrs Murphy said.

“This was realised at the 2011 Australian University Sports Awards when Notre Dame was recognised for winning the Doug Ellis Trophy at the 2010 Australian University Games for the first time in the University’s history.

“The sporting atmosphere on Campus is growing each year and we hope to encourage more athletes to follow in the footsteps of this year’s award winners in 2012.”

Medicine students at the Sydney Campus also made history at the 2011 New South Wales Medical Students Council Sports Day by winning the Overall Champions trophy for the first time.

The Left Bank was packed out last Friday night with the over 150 students and staff attending the Notre Dame Sports Awards Evening. The night celebrated the achievements of both our athletes and sport teams throughout 2011.

We highlighted our AFL team who have won two years in a row defeating all four other WA universities in the Tertiary Sports WA competition. The Men’s University Games Hockey Team wore their medallions with pride on the night after leaving the Gold Coast with Gold around their necks.

A huge congratulations goes to the category winners!

Most Outstanding Achievement To Sport: Lauren Mitchell for her achievements in gymnastics at the AT&T American Cup in Florida, Japan Cup in Tokyo, Australian National championships and 2011 World Championships.

Sportswomen of the year: Cathryn Earl for represent Notre Dame in TSWA water polo team and representing Australia on the under 18’s national team

Sportsman of the year: Josh Court for represent Notre Dame in TSWA beach volleyball team and representing Notre Dame at the World university Games in China

Touring team of the year: The University Games Baseball team displayed high spirits and skills on and off the field not just at the games but throughout the year.

The application process for the 2012 Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme is now open. The Programme seeks to enhance internationalisation in Japan by promoting mutual understanding between the people of Japan and those of other nations. It aims to enhance foreign language education and promote international exchange at the local level through the fostering of ties between Japanese youth and foreign youth alike. The objectives of the Programme are achieved by offering participants the opportunity to serve in local authorities as well as public and private primary, junior high and senior high schools.

Notre Dame Men's Hockey team brings home Gold!

After only their second year playing as a team, The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Men’s Hockey team has returned to Fremantle with a Gold Medal from the 2011 AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITY GAMES.

The games began in 1993 and each year the sporting schedule is made up of individual and team sports. Queensland was the host for this year’s games which attracted 6,700 participants from across the country who competed in 29 different sports.

Athletics, Baseball, Golf, Beach Volleyball, Netball and Touch Rugby were just some of the sports teams from Notre Dame’s Fremantle and Sydney campuses competed in.

The impressive Men’s Hockey team finished with a Bronze medal their first year, qualifying them to compete in 2011.

“They definitely have become a formidable force,” says Fremantle Campus Sports Officer Jaimee Murphy, who accompanied the team to the national event.

“It was so exciting watching them win 4 - 1 against Deakin University,” said Mrs Murphy. “They only lost one game during the week against the University of Ballarat.”

“Our team included players with a range of skills and experience,” explains team captain, Jason Tate.

“I believe that it was through mate-ship and teamwork that we developed that we were able to win gold."

Take advantage of the fact that your lecturers are there for you. Ask questions, see them in their priority times. Very few students in Australia have that opportunity.

Get a good nights sleep.

No one memory stands out, it's all the good memories put together than make up my experience at Notre Dame.

6. What is your favourite thing about going to university at Notre Dame?

The people - other students, lecturers, support staff.

7. Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

I see myself driving a car that has a working accelerator. It's my number one priority looking into the future.

8. What is the one thing you cannot leave the house without?

My laptop.

9. What advice would you give yourself if you could go back to any time?

Prioritise!

Some of the lecturers in the School of Business are pretty inspiring - Greg, Gerry, Derek. There are a lot of students, myself included, who have gained a lot from them in terms of inspiration.

Mentoring project for new nursing students a winner

Building on the great success of The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Mentor Program launched in 2009, the School of Nursing & Midwifery and the Student Life Office (SLO) have collaborated to offer the program to all first year Nursing students on the University’s Fremantle Campus.

“The program really helped me to ease into the demands of university life. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that there’s someone you can go to for advice.”

1st year Nursing student.

Offered on a voluntary basis, the important pastoral care initiative connects first year students with second and third year Nursing students providing invaluable support as the new students make their transition into a tertiary learning environment.

The School of Nursing & Midwifery is the first school within the University to offer the Mentor Program to all their new students. Professor Selma Alliex, Dean of the School of Nursing, Fremantle, said she was delighted with the response to the initiative:

“I am very proud of our students who have taken on the mentoring role. They undertake most of the activities in their own time in spite of a very busy semester load. We believe that this kind of mentoring is important to our commitment to assist our new students. It is a perfect fit with our clinical model which is a mentorship model of clinical supervision.”

An ‘Appreciation Lunch’ was held in September during which the contribution of the mentors was acknowledged, with each receiving a certificate of appreciation from Professor Alliex.

Coordinator of the Mentor Program, Ervina Ng, explains that the program has been growing from strength to strength since it was introduced in 2009:

“In addition to all the nursing students we also have mentors from other schools involved in mentoring over 400 new students on the Fremantle Campus. We have had an overwhelming response from new students heralding how valuable the support has been for them.”

3. How did you come to choose Notre Dame/ this field of study?
I originally got an offer to study law at UWA, but Notre Dame was much more appealing considering the area of law I want to work in. I really wanted to study a social justice major, and Notre Dame is the only West Australian University that offers this.

4. Do you have a lucky charm to help you through exams?

Does sleep count?.

5. What is your nickname amongst your friends?

Smoph.

6. What are you famous for?

Misspelling my name on a test in year 11 - hence 'Smoph'.

7. Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

Working for the Aborginal Legal Service in the Kimberley

8. Best kept secret around Fremantle?

The cheap and delicious Turkish delights from the Kakulas Sisters.

9. Where is your favourite place to holiday?

I travelled pretty extensively last year, and my favourite places were Berlin, Krakow, and Budapest.

10. What did you want to be when you grew up?

A bank teller because I thought they kept all the money they handled.

11. What advice would you give yourself if you could go back to any time?

Stress less and just do your best! This really won't matter in the long run.

12. Do you have a hero/ someone who inspires you?

Doreen Green. She is a Halls Creek lady who was caught up in the Stolen Generation but remains a strong, independent aboriginal lady that tirelessly campaigns for the rights of her community.

2011 Secretary for NDSSJ, and the 2012 Vice-President of the Student Association!

3. How did you come to choose Notre Dame/ this field of study?

I chose Notre Dame because of the friendly and warm nature of all the staff that I did, and have, encountered. It is amazing that a University still has a true dedication to its students; I’ve never felt like someone’s income, unfortunately I can’t say the same for my friends at other universities.

4. Do you have a lucky charm to help you through exams?

A long macchiato.

5. What is your nickname amongst your friends?

I get called a lot of things, but C-Rad mostly.

6. What are you famous for?

Changing my degree and units.

7. Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

Hopefully working for government in education policy, and just generally happy. I do still dream of having a house in France though, maybe I’ll work towards that!

8. Best kept secret around Fremantle?

The view in the Navy Club.

9. Where is your favourite place to holiday?

I was over in Sydney in the semester break, it was great! I fell in love with the city!

10. What did you want to be when you grew up?

I can’t decide! I’m doing an assignment on the Sex Discrimination Act which is just so interesting! I think I’ll end up doing a few different things in the public service.

11. What advice would you give yourself if you could go back to any time?

Wake up earlier! There’s so much to do with every day!

12. Do you have a hero/ someone who inspires you?

I’m inspired by a lot of people, but people with perseverance who know what they want and can make a positive change in the world amaze me!

Get organised!! Time management is important at uni. Also ask questions if unsure – UND Fremantle is a very friendly campus.

Spend some time preparing a good CV - first impressions count.

Be resilient. It is competitive out there to get a job so if you get a few knockbacks, don’t let it get you down.......keep your chin up

4. Best memory of Notre Dame so far?

School of Health Sciences has a graduating dinner for students, staff and parents and this is a highlight on the calendar. Great night and good to see students finish their studies. A few stories are told about their time @ UND which are always good to hear.

5. What is your favourite thing about working at The University of Notre Dame?

Sense of community between staff and students

6. Favourite quote?

1. What do you study at Notre Dame?

I am currently Studying a Bachelor of Commerce and looking to major in Finance.

2. How did you come to choose Notre Dame/ this field of study?

Initially I was very interested in the field of Economics and recognising that the Bachelor of Commerce provided this area of study was a significant factor in my decision.

3. Tips for commencing students?

Attend your tute's they can mean the difference between passing and failing your exams. And when attending tutorials ask plenty of questions, tutors have so many different ways of explaining thing!!

4. How do you survive exams?

Studying in chunks; my mind is easily distracted and by minimising my study times to around two hours I absorb the content more readily.

5. Do you have a lucky charm to help you through exams?

Nope, no charms for me, however I have a few sneaky habits that improve my concentration such as chewing gum, pens or nails.

6. Best memory of Notre Dame so far?

Me and Neelkanth Patel, rushing to finish our Accounting assignment on time after realising on the day that what we had already done was completely wrong. A stressful but great day.

7. What is your favourite thing about going to university at Notre Dame?

The amazing location, populated with an array of bars and restaurants of course. And the unique learning style Notre dame offers.

8. Favourite quote said by a lecturer?

“The exam is only worth 40 percent of your overall marks” - Mike Fazey

9. What is your nickname amongst your friends?

My name is short enough not to have one, but I was once referred to as Mr Blonde.

10. What are you famous for?

My appetite for Mexican food and my distinct mass of fluffy blonde hair.

11. Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

Hopefully working in the world of finance, whether that may be for a bank or perhaps the stock market.

12. Where is your favourite place to eat lunch in Fremantle?

Eating fresh at Subway.

13. What is the one thing you cannot leave the house without?

My phone of course.

14. Best kept secret around Fremantle?

The Guinness pie at Rosie O'grady's Irish pub to die for!

15. Where is your favourite place to holiday?

Kalbarri around mid January is, by experience; paradise!

16. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to be a optician, until I realised the amount of time I would have to spend studying to partake in this profession.

17. Favourite way to relax?

There is no better way to relax than to spend time at the pub with the girlfriend and mates.

18. What advice would you give yourself if you could go back to any time?

Stress less when it comes to exams, you can only do what you know, and its often the case of being lucky on the day. Some questions are out there to trick you, so read them properly.

19. What’s on your iPod currently?

I'm heavily into the psychedelic sounds of Tame impala; especially the album 'innerspeaker'. They only reinforce the idea that some of the best music comes from Perth.

20. Do you have a hero/ someone who inspires you?

James Douglas (Jim) Morrison who lived the life many of us could only dream of. His music still inspires me in almost everything I do. “The blue bus, is calling us!”

1. What did you study at Notre Dame?

Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Theatre Studies

2. How did you come to choose Notre Dame/ this field of study?

Being an International student, it was the most attractive university. After I had a stimulating conversation with the Head of Theatre Studies, I decided to study at Notre Dame. All my life I have been involved in performing, and a formal qualification would help me to pursue this dream sometime in the future.

3. Tips for commencing students?

Ask questions, proof read your work, plan some time for your work – don’t start it the day before - study only what you study and not what your parents want you to do. Enjoy!

4. How do you survive exams?

Don’t start studying the day before exams, or do an assignment the night before it is due - learn throughout the semester, not just at the end.

Have a friend test you before the exam.

5. Best memory of Notre Dame so far?

Awarded with the Commended Academic Performance. I really enjoyed all the theatre Units

6. What is your favourite thing about going to university at Notre Dame?

The people - You get treated as a person, not as a number!

7. What are you famous for?

I’m loud and I laugh a lot

8. Where is your favourite place to eat lunch in Fremantle?

“Brakes” on High Street

1. What did you study at Notre Dame?

Bachelor or Arts – major history, minor archaeology

2. How did you come to choose Notre Dame/ this field of study?

I initially enrolled for a degree in counselling but decided that I had really wanted to study history for years. When it came down to it I thought I should study purely for the love of learning and not for what I am going to do with it, we change jobs and fields a lot easier now I don’t regret it because I enjoyed the experience.

3. Tips for commencing students?

Be organised from the beginning of term so you know what is coming up and when things are due, its a great feeling when you start marking them off the list and you’ve structured your time well enough to get everything in without having to do too many late night burn outs because you didn’t pay attention

4. Tips for graduating students?

Your first job out may not be the one you really want but think of it as your apprenticeship, and keep working towards what it is you really want to do. Being employed shows that you have ability and will give the opportunity to become more choosy in the interviews you will go for which will get you to do the job you want to do.

5. How did you survive exams?

In my first semester I switched dates around in my head for two exams I turned up to an exam I had studied for but 4 days ago and I was suppose to do my revision for after the exam I had studied for and thought I was turning up for. It was my worst subject with my worst mark. I hyperventilated for about 5 minutes and thought – just go for it you have a one in three chances to pass and that is better than nothing. I did lots of yoga breathing and really focused. I passed it really well and after that I was very organised and vigilant that I never made that mistake again, but I also realised I could do well even under enourmous pressure. Don’t buy into your fear.

6. Did you have a lucky charm to help you through exams?

I did not have a charm, but I would always meditate in the morning and see myself passing, I would go in focused and know that I was giving it my best shot.

7. Best memory of Notre Dame so far?

That I got a degree! That it is a small, friendly supportive university, that you don’t feel lost in. For me it was really lovely like being in Europe, because the uni is in a really supper location, all the buildings are filled with history. My daughter changed her uni to go to Notre Dame and she graduates at the end of the year she thought it was the best decision. For me the fact that I finally got the opportunity to attend uni and that I got to go there with my daughter is a wonderful memory.

Ten Thousand Reasons to Support Caritas Programs in Africa

A journalism and social justice student from The University of Notre Dame Australia’s (UNDA) Fremantle Campus is aiming to raise $10,000 for rehabilitation programs in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) which support survivors of sexual violence.

From June this year, 29-year-old student Isabelle Jose has been working tirelessly, with support from Caritas Australia and UNDA, to raise awareness about the systematic kidnapping, raping and mutilating of women and girls by local and foreign militias in the DRC.

The 2008 multi-award winning documentary, The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo, directed by former gang rape victim Lisa F. Jackson, will be screened at the Tannock Hall of Education in Fremantle on Saturday, 3 September 2011.

Throughout the movie, Ms Jackson speaks with victims of sexual violence to hear their remarkable stories of survival, as well as some of the perpetrators of these crimes.

Prior to the film’s screening there will be a special video recording from Caritas Australia Africa Program Officer, Lulu Mitshabu, about the organisation’s work in the DRC.

Ms Jose, who is hoping to complete a photo journalism project in the DRC next year, says the funds raised will help to mitigate cases of HIV and AIDS in the large African community, and assist with trauma counselling and medical aid for rape victims.

Funds raised will also be used to cover the reintegration of child soldiers into a non-violent lifestyle.

“I feel that the movie screening will generate more awareness about the atrocities going on in central Africa,” Ms Jose said.

“The biggest realisation I’ve had through the fundraising process is that you cannot save the world, but you can help the people who are experiencing this hurt right now.

“I’m really hoping to raise the full $10,000 and if anyone would like to contribute funds to the cause, it would be really appreciated.”

The release of the 2012 edition of the Good Universities Guide to Australian Universities and Private Colleges has seen The University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA) awarded five star ratings for the fifth year in a row.

Notre Dame has consistently achieved five stars in the areas of Teaching Quality and Graduate Satisfaction with the 2012 edition also acknowledging the University’s Entry Flexibility for the first time.

New category, Domestic Graduates: Teaching Quality, Generic Skills and Overall Satisfaction, earned another three, five star ratings.

Vice Chancellor, Professor Celia Hammond, said she was delighted with the ratings the University had received from this highly influential publication.

“The consistency of these significant results in the areas of Teaching Quality and Graduate Satisfaction are testament to the commitment of our outstanding staff.

“We are delighted to also achieve a five star rating for our entry flexibility. Our admissions process is a distinctive characteristic of our University. 1. What do you enjoy most about UNDA?

I love the people I get to study with. Every day I come to uni knowing that they are going to make me laugh and have a great time.

2. What you are currently doing on and off campus?

On campus, I study a Bachelor of Law/Commerce. Off campus, I love to exercise, cook, catch up with friends and spend time with my family.

3. Who is your Favorite Lecturer and why?

My favourite lecturer has been Gerry Kelly. She is very witty, knowledgeable, always willing to help out if you put the effort in and doesn't let you get away with slacking off too often!

4. Are you a dog or cat person?

I have one of each, but I am definitely a dog person (although I do love my cat!). I love how a dog is always so excited to see you after a long day and always so affectionate and active.

5. What is an ideal holiday for you?

An ideal holiday for me is somewhere where there is sun and surf. Somewhere that is relaxing, warm and peaceful and doesn't require a hockey stick to be packed!

Name: Anthea McCormick

1. Besides studying, what have you got involved in Notre Dame?

Last year I volunteered with the annual Notre Dame Children's Day for the first time and loved it so much I have signed up for this year too. I also helped out at O-Day 2011 at the Sport Signup Stall. I am involved with the Mentor Programme as a mentor.

2. In particular about your involvement as a mentor in the Mentor Program, what has the experience been like for you?

It’s been fantastic, I loved the chance to get to know some fellow peers better and also make their transition into first year go smoothly. It has also made me think back to my first year and what had helped and could have helped me. It’s been awesome to meet mentors from other schools who I don't usually meet. Overall, it’s been a learning curve for me and a great growing experience.

3. Favourite lunch place in Freo, and why?

Definitely Moore and Moore- their Potato Mash and Chorizo wrap it to die for. And the atmosphere there is laid back. I am also liking The Attic’s lunch selection and quirky upstairs area.

4. What do you see yourself in five years’ time?

I would love to be the events manager for Cirque Du Soliel in Quebec or travelling around the world as an event consultant working on the Olympics or something similar. I would love to live in Perth, but I want to experience the world first.
